Healthy Berry Crisp

Who's Ready For A Healthy Dessert?!

This recipe is the perfect evening dessert, and on top of that, it's perfectly healthy! This mixed berry crisp is gluten-free, refined sugar-free, vegetarian (vegan), and even dairy-free. Using simple ingredients you will have a delicious and nutritious dessert to serve to you and your guests. Serve this crisp with yogurt, whipped cream, or even ice cream of choice. This recipe only takes into account the ingredients for the crisp, not what you are serving it with.

What's Needed:

  • Oats

    • Make sure your oats are certified gluten-free. We prefer to use rolled oats compared to quick or instant oats. Rolled oats just hold better, but quick oats can definitely be used.

  • Crushed Pecans

    • Feel free to change or add different nuts/seeds. For example, we've made other crisps with crushed almonds, walnuts, pumpkin seeds, and more.

  • Coconut flakes (optional)

    • The coconut helps to add to the texture, but it can be omitted.

  • Flour (GF)

    • Any gluten-free flour will work, all-purpose, almond, coconut, oat, and more.

  • Maple syrup

    • You can use other sweeteners like honey or granulated sugar. If you have particular dietary needs, please check and consider what type of sweetener you use. As honey is not vegan and granulated sugar is refined.

  • Coconut oil

    • Can use melted butter or another liquid fat. Again, take into consideration what fat source you use so it still fits your dietary needs.

  • Cinnamon

    • Just a must, haha!

  • Berries

    • For this recipe, we used blueberries and raspberries. Feel free to try different berries or fruits. You can use fresh or frozen fruits too.

Put it Together:

  1. Make the oat crumble by combining rolled oats, pecans, flour, maple syrup, coconut oil, and cinnamon. Mix well!

  2. Wash any fresh berries and place them in a baking dish or pie pan.

    1. We wanted to keep the filling simple and easy. Many crips will add additional sugars, corn starch to thicken the berry juices, and lemon juice to the berries. Sure, it's only going to make the berries more delicious, but we find it not necessary. Just note, you can use/add the above-listed extras to the filling if desired.

  3. Layer the oat crumble around the berries.

  4. Bake in a preheated 350-degree F oven for about 30 minutes. Or until berries are bubbling and the top is browned.

    1. You can cover the dish with tin foil to help prevent over-browning.

  5. Serve with greek yogurt, whipped cream, or ice cream.

    1. Can use vegan and dairy-free creams/ice creams.
